What is Midsommar?

Midsommar (or Midsummer in English) is also known as the Summer Solstice. It is the longest day of the year and celebrated by many countries. In particular, Scandinavian countries such as Sweden and Finland celebrate the holiday to welcome much-awaited daylight after a dark winter. Festivities include a smörgåsbord of culinary items, including Swedish meatballs, potatoes with dill, pickled herring, and grilled meat. In the countryside, wildflowers are collected and turned into beautiful flower crowns and used to decorate the maypole. Special dancing occurs around the maypole, and the party continues with aquavit and group singing throughout the evening!
